Carticulate began with a self-initiated redesign of a spidery system that desperately needed clarity. The project won support from local media and institutions like the Walker Arts Center.
Soon after the Skyway Map release, Carticulate was contracted on the Asheville Redefines Transit campaign. Unity and clarity were priorities of the project, and we chose a visual language that used color with purpose and represented service types accurately. The map became a piece of Asheville identity – featured on t-shirts and selected for the 2012 NACIS Atlas of Design.
Carticulate approached the challenge of creating unique maps in the city of Asheville, NC. We utilized a diagram-style system map, building one of the few US transit maps to show every bus stop on each route. We unified consistent branding and symbology within the individual route maps and brochures. In working with the mountainous geography of Asheville, our approach eliminated visual clutter and efficiently displayed how routes travel throughout the city. On a more detailed level, our individual route maps showed how the bus routes move locally through Asheville, highlighting transfers and points of interest while maintaining a clean and clear map.
Carticulate continued to develop a number of transportation maps for organizations including Des Moines Area Regional Transit, Nashville MPO, and Central Maryland. We also created interactive maps for ecotourism organizations including SENE Nomadic Adventures.
